*Fins que surti el sol* consists of seven songs that, in a way, make us wonder just how many emotions are packed into them. You finish listening and find yourself wanting to go back to them—much like we had already done with the advance singles, though now they take on a new meaning when heard as part of the album as a whole.
There was that smile that would come over us with “El cel,” because we recognized those people around us who seem to make everything easy—who stripped away that unnecessary complexity that exists simply out of habit. Or the smile evoked by “Un dinar dels que s’allarguen,” with its gentle message inviting us to enjoy the small, everyday things. But there is also that shiver one feels when listening to “Fins que surti el sol”—a feeling that evolves depending on the person and the moment…
These are feelings we can make our own, for Roko Banana speaks of the loneliness that somehow stalks us in an increasingly dehumanized world. They address this reality without succumbing to despair or clinging to the notion that the past was better. Their approach is to look ahead and seek something better and more just—even if hope itself can be a double-edged sword.
Doubts and contradictions notwithstanding, Roko Banana approach their songs as a way to enjoy music in its most essential form—for the sheer pleasure of creation and of letting themselves be carried away by specific arrangements, melodies, and rhythms that flow beyond genre boundaries. Could we say theirs is indie rock, in the original, more primal sense of the term? They capture something of that spirit—recalling the days when the genre emerged from a highly sensitive brand of alternative rock defined by unbridled guitars and an unabashed willingness to embrace other styles.
